This exhibit spans nearly 125 years, beginning with the arrival of Jews fleeing Recife, Brazil in 1654, as the Portuguese, who continued the persecution of Jews through the Inquisition, invaded the once-Dutch colony.  These Jews and others from Europe, sought refuge in the Americas, first in the Dutch port of New Amsterdam, and later in the cities that developed along the coast.  These Jewish traders and merchants created not only lucrative businesses, but also established communal life through congregations that still exist today.

The Opening Reception was held on Sunday, February 15, 2026.  In attendance were Monmouth County Historical Commission commissioners Glenn Cashion and Joseph Grabas; Judy Kusher, Marlboro Township; Larry Gurman, JHMOMC Board President; Freehold Township Committee members Anthony Ammiano and Maureen Fasano; Alice Berman, Exhibits Chair, and Barry Haber, Executive Director.
